Waveguide Design, Modelling, And Optimization:
From Photonic Nano-Devices To Integrated Photonic Circuits
OTTAWA, ONTARIO --- The International Society of Optical Engineering, SPIE, invited Optiwave to present a technical paper at the January 2004 conference, Photonics West. Highlights of the paper are presented here, and Optiwave invites readers to download the paper from the Optiwave website at: http://www.optiwave.com/2003/products/optifdtd/MS535510.pdf
This paper presents the state-of-the-art in commercial design and simulation software for the ‘front end’ of photonic circuit design. A recent advancement in design and simulation software is to create a unified software platform that facilitates using more than one numerical technique on sub-components, and delivers for system level simulation and analysis of optical circuits.
There are a number of popular and proven numerical techniques for analysis of photonic devices, including Beam Propagation Method (BPM), Coupled Mode Theory (CMT), and Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) Method. The paper presents recent advancements in these well-established numerical techniques. These advancements enable the analysis of nano-particles, metals, and non-linear materials by FDTD, photonic crystal design and analysis, and improved models for high concentration Er/Yb co-doped glass waveguide amplifiers.
For larger photonic circuits, it may not be practical to analyze the whole circuit by any one of these methods alone. However, the photonic circuit may be broken down into smaller parts that are effectively analyzed by at least one of these standard techniques. Then, the whole circuit can be analysed on a unified software platform that integrates design and numerical techniques modules through a seamless interface. This paper demonstrates solutions for more complex structures ranging from the sub-component layout, through the entire device characterization, to the mask layout and editing. This kind of approach can enable analysis for cases that would otherwise be too cumbersome, or even impossible.
